Description

Aberlour A’bunadh Batch 60 is the 60th release, from one of the longest surviving cask strength releases among all distilleries.  First batches (unnumbered at the start) were issued back in 1997 and the latest batch released in 2018 is Batch 62.  Each batch of this whisky is blended from barrels ranging from 5 to 25 years old.

A’bunadh is exclusively aged in Spanish oak Oloroso sherry butts, therefore, gives it a sweeter, softer flavour than most Scotch. A’bunadh is not chill filtered.

The name a’bunadh is described as the Scottish Gaelic for ”the original’,  though is possibly a misspelling of am bunadh, meaning ‘the origin’.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Brandy butter, cinnamon buns, a touch of sun-dried tomato.

Palate: Brown sugar, dark chocolate, Christmas cake drenched in rum, flamed orange peel.

Finish: A generous handful of cinnamon, clove and black pepper.

    A Good Solid Batch

This is the second A’bunadh I have tried and I like it a little bit better than the first (from batch 53)

This whisky comes in Hot, at 60.3% I really like cask strength whiskies, but this one did need a couple capfuls of water.

On the nose, you get a lot of what you would expect: black cherries, black currant, dried fruit and raisins. Also a big caramel note. Buttery, toffee goodness, like a good speysider should.

In the Mouth, more of the same: lots of dried fruit, currants and raisins, but I felt the toffee notes took over here. There was also a touch of molasses and chocolate.
The Finish was sweet, bitter, and long-lasting, with a touch of spiciness and cinnamon. This whisky coats all of the top of your tongue with peppery spice and tingles.

Overall, I highly recommend the A’bunadh. Sherry-cask monsters like these have a wonderful nose that you can enjoy for a long time before even taking a mouthful. On the tongue, they are Hot – these cask strengths aren’t playing around – but they are also incredibly rich with a nice creamy mouthful.

“Rich” is a good word to describe the whole experience. I would give this whisky an 89
