Peat fans, hold on to your hats. As here comes another Octomore from the Bruichladdich distillery on Islay! The Octomore 07.1 is a 5 year old single malt Scotch whisky, which has been peated to 208 PPM and bottled at 59.5% ABV. The Octomore expressions are always a treat, this one is as complex and intense as ever for sure. What’s more, it still maintaining a sense of poise and elegance. Oh, and peat. Plenty of yummy, smoky peat.
Each expression in the Octomore series has a different bottle. The Octomore 07.1 is packaged in a striking matte black bottle with a silver neck and lettering. It looks great, but you cannot see the colour of the whisky inside obviously.
Appearance: Dark straw in colour. Unusually dark considering it has no artificial colouring added and non-chill filtered as well.
Aroma: The smoke is evident as soon as you open the bottle. And you half expect to see it wafting from the glass, such is its potency.
Taste: If you are not used to cask strength whisky, then the combination of 59.5% ABV and such a high level of peating will make it a tough one. Some water, we’d suggest adding another 50% of the volume as water or ice, and this really does show off the wizardry behind the Bruichladdich artisans.
Yes, there are whiskies that taste smokier, and there are whiskies from Islay that are tough to get down your neck. This is where Octomore is a game changer – it’s a young spirit, cask strength, heavily peated and it trickles down like a damn good cigar wrapped in silk.
What some of our whisky loving friends have said about Octomore 07.1
Quote 1 “With 171 bottles in my collection, I felt that I needed at least one Octomore. If you love your peat and then you are going to love this. It is rather sweet for such a strong Peaty whiskey. It reminds me of Ardbeg Corryvreckan but with more of a punch. “
Quote 2 “I got this bottle for my Christmas from my mother – who is becoming quite the whisky buying expert! Lucky me. I love the big whiskies – big on flavour and big on taste. This is one of those whiskies. I’m hopeless at identifying flavours, but this one reminds me of all those bad boy Octomores I’ve drunk before and wished I owned. Now I have one. Thanks Mum.”
