Black and White 1970’s – Collectible Whisky

Black and White Scotch Whisky is an antique bottling of Buchanan’s Black & White from the 1970s. We estimate it to be a 1974 bottling, making it 45 years in the bottle (at 2019).

After attending a dog show, Allegedly James Buchanan got inspiration out of it to create this blend. Therefore, it would explain why 1970’s bottlings have a black and a white dog on the front.  1960’s bottles typically don’t have the dog.  This is an early 1970’s (pre-1974) because most bottlings after 1970 have a box with vertical stripes, as opposed to the black and white tartan effect pattern. Besides, younger bottles also feature the dog on the bottle label.  This isn’t 1960’s as the cap would be a spring cap rather a screw cap.

The bottle itself is in near perfect condition with a high neck fill level.  No damage to the labels or the screw cap.  The box is slightly worn and faded with age, but the fact that it even has a box is a rarity for these bottles at this age.

This bottle was originally made for the french market.  Furthermore, it has the French importer, Sovema, 5 Rue La Boetie and Paris on the label.

The price reflects the age of the bottle the scarcity of something still in such good condition, the box and the fact that this really is a piece of scotch whisky history.

Buchanan’s Black & White is quite the literary star, appearing in both Ian Fleming’s Moonraker. Even Bond himself sipped it. And in Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions.
