Mortlach Rare Old
The opening entry in the super-premium Mortlach range, combining bourbon- and sherry-matured whisky to create a spicy, rich and flavoursome dram that shows off the distillery’s excellent spirit.
Description
The first release from the new range of Mortlach single malts is the Mortlach Rare Old, which comes from a mixture of Sherry and bourbon casks. Those familiar with Mortlach through the Flora and Fauna release might know Mortlach as a bit of a Sherry monster, but this new bottling brings to light a complex, warming and spicy side of Mortlach’s personality.
Tasting Note
Nose: Sugary biscuits (maybe Nice biscuits), baked apple and crushed nuts. Fudge and herbal, leafy notes persist.
Palate: Rich and full of palate entry, with spicy notes of cinnamon sticks and oak. Then there’s vanilla, raisin and biscuit-y notes paired with dark jam (Jammy Dodgers?). That leafy, earthy note from the nose continues on the palate too.
Finish: Warm and drying with cinnamon, pepper and vanilla.
Overall: A top start to the new range of Mortlach single malts.
