Description
It’s the first batch of a new cask strength expression from Benromach. Distilled in 2008, this single malt spent the following years maturing in both first-fill bourbon and sherry casks. It was then bottled in 2019, with an outturn of 5,500 bottles at 57.9% ABV. Powerfully flavoursome stuff from the Speyside-based distillery.
Benromach promote themselves as the “Classic Speysider”, despite having a flavour profile that is slightly different to most other Speyside malts. As well as a light character, Benromach malts also tend to have a hint of smoke, which is not common in the region.Speyside is known for its Sherried malts, with fruit and spices taking the lead.
At Benromach, they like to honour the Speyside malts that have gone before. Their malts include a hint of smoke because that’s what Speyside malts would have tasted like back in the day when there were no machines to dry barley. They are a very traditional distillery and still do everything by hand to this day.
Tasting Note
Nose: Loads of sherry aromas alongside toasty oak, sweet vanilla custard and stewed orchard fruit, with a balanced light herbaceous undertone.
Palate: Black pepper and fresh strawberries intertwine, with creamy fruit and nut milk chocolate, banana bread, smoked orange peel and waxy citrus.
Finish: More of that milk chocolate lingers with salted caramel and bonfire smoke.
