Description

The Macallan Edition Number 1 is the debut expression in the Edition Series.  It celebrates The Macallan’s oak cask management policy that oversees the entire process from wood sourcing to finished, seasoned cask.

It also showcases the profound influence of The Macallan’s exceptional oak casks into the flavour of the whisky. The result of Macallan Edition Number 1 is a bold single malt drawn from eight of the better European and American oak cask styles and sizes, sherry-seasoned and aged to perfection.  Before being combined to create this rich and multidimensional whisky.

The character of each cask style lives within the whisky, creating a taste journey that begins with soft oak notes and takes one’s palate to deeper, richer flavours. When married, these casks bring together a distinctive flavour profile that highlights The Macallan’s complexity and diversity. Bottled at a higher strength of 48% ABV for a fuller, richer flavour.

Tasting Notes

Colour:  Deep Copper.

Nose:  At first it seems quite simple, in the classic aromas – textbook European oak dried fruits, executed perfectly. But give it a little while longer and even more starts to show through. Besides, vanilla, golden syrup drizzled over a sponge cake. Apricots. Creme brûlée. Strawberry jam. Bird’s custard. Quite waxy, too.

Palate:  Plums, viscous texture, delivering a wonderful sweet-savoury profile.  Those dried fruits: raisins, figs, with damson jam.  Mince pies.  Walnuts.  Burnt toast, burnt sugar.  There’s just a fraction too much woodiness playing through here: the black pepper notes just don’t quite complete it.  Though the dried fruits endure, there’s almost a touch of dark ale on the finish. Complex stuff.

Finish:  Medium to long and lingering.
