Description
The distillery announced a release of Port Askaig 100 Proof in 2015. This is a big, smoky single malt Scotch whisky from an undisclosed Islay distillery. Bottled at 57.1% ABV – which is 100° Proof in a traditional system of alcohol content measurement. Different from 100 proof, you’re much more likely to see on American bottlings.
Port Askaig is widely reported to be Caol Ila; the names a rather suggestive hint but no guarantee!
Tasting Notes
Nose: Quite spirity neat. So the need for a good splash of water, but it calms down nicely to reveal sooty lemons, a familiar peaty tang and liquorice. There’s a touch of leather with seashell minerality. Wet pebbles on a salty shore kind of thing – ash and is that a whiff of wet dog?
Palate: Follows on from the nose really. Sweet upfront with the lemon, then goes sour and drying with the leather and liquorice and some star anise coming out more as it turns slightly sour.
Finish: Longer than you may expect. Moreover, the soot and ash start to come to the fore. You’re left with quite a lingering and thick mouth coating, ashy sweetness that’s very appealing.
