Description

George and Alexander Walker brothers launched Johnnie Walker Red Label in its current form in 1909. Though it had existed as Walker’s Special Old Highland Red Label for some years previously. Alexander blended a type of whisky which is more suited to mixing with soda than the heavier, more old-fashioned whiskies. Besides, he named it after his grandfather. The old man had started the family business in 1820. Today it is the world’s popular whisky and is sold in more than 200 markets.

The nose is quite pungent and full. There are notes of heather roots, cut herbs, a touch of fresh fruits and honey. The palate is quite full and rich. There are notes of malted barley and potpourri, a touch of winter spice and fruitcake. The finish is quite long and pungent, there is a good smoke note with a touch of oak.

What some of our whisky enthusiast friends have said about Johnnie Walker Red Label

Quote 1 “Unusual taste! Not a generic ‘whisky taste’ that you might expect from a cheap blend. There is some peat, lots of pear and it is actually good enough to sip. The finish is very honeyed. For the money, this has to be considered a bargain. In addition, could give many entry-level malts a serious kick up the backside.”

Quote 2 “Pretty good. You get a flavor of genuine scotch whisky unlike the ‘ bottled in India’ scotches – Teachers, Vat69, 100 Pipers, Black Dog etc….tried them all.

Reviewing this on Wednesday 8th May 2019. Bottle code L7191CL005 – bottling date 20170710.

I haven’t personally touched Red Label for about 20 years. Partly because I kinda have to appear to be more of a whisky snob in my old age (comes with the job of selling whisky…..) and partly because the last time I tried it I thought it was absolutely vile. But, maybe its old age and a more mature palate, or maybe it’s because the conspiracy theorists (that suggest all JW products taste different now to how they were “back in the day”) are right, and the product has changed – but, weirdly enough this is actually not that back.

Surprisingly fruity on the nose, something between pears and plums (not apples or citrus) with some background floral notes and possibly some caramel or burnt sugar.. The taste is again, slightly fruity, some wood elements there, slightly oaked. The finish is dry, crisp and with a tiny hint of peat in the background.

A few drops of water (drops…nothing more) do open a bit more depth on the nose and palate.

It really isn’t that bad. It’s not amazing. But what can be expected at the price of a burger and fries at a gastropub? Although, to be fair, I’d rather have the whisky over some gastropub offering……I give it a 3 stars out of 5 because I’m balancing price with product. There are better whiskies around this price, but there are plenty more that are worse.
