Description

Aberlour 12 is always a good choice for those that like partially sherry cask matured or fully sherry cask matured whisky.  Despite it being part of the Pernod Ricard stable, it’s also one of the best value Speyside malts around.  This double matured version is a mix of traditional oak and sherry casks and is rich and fruity with delicious Christmas cake notes.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Buttery cinnamon toast, concentrated raisin in the background, astringent woody touches, glacé cherry, barrel char.

Palate: Big sweet butter hit, with maple syrup, brown sugar, plump raisins, nutmeg, milk chocolate and more of the char from the nose.

Finish: Medium length, with chocolate, raisins and more char.

Comment: A sweet dram with good levels of sherry spice and richness, although not overly heavy. There is a touch of welcome bitter char that reigns the dram in before it can become too sweet, providing excellent balance.

What some of our whisky enthusiast friends have said about Aberlour 12

Quote 1 “Hard to fault, lovely whisky for the price.

A touch of sweetness with some oak and a nice spicy finish, but not too overpowering. I think I get a tiny hint of fudge or similar, too. The Aberlour range (Aberlour 10) was my first venture into ‘nice’ whisky terrirory. So I’ll always have a sweet spot for their whiskies. I haven’t purchased the 12 for a while so it’s nice to revisit an old friend. I think it’s a great buy and though I am still learning, it makes for a lovely dram without being too complex, i.e the peatiness of Laphroaigh (which I love), or peppery notes of Talisker (the ones I have tried, anyway). Give it a try, even if it isn’t exactly to your taste it would be very difficult to vehemently dislike it. Although this is purely cosmetic, I also like the bottle!

Quote 2 “A very nice, decently priced Speyside. Nice with a couple of drops of water to open it up. Vanilla, orange zest and a spicy finish. Much nicer than the Aberlour 10 and factoring in the price, a solid 4 stars.”
